ABOUT US:
PRESIDENT’S CORNER July 2020
By Judy Maniskas
Dear Members and Friends,
To say that this year has been an unusual one for the Society is an
Understatement!
The worldwide pandemic reared its ugly head here in Hocking County in March.
We were happy to comply with Governor DeWine’s measures for safety and good
health, and therefore the Museum has been closed to visitors since
that time. Unfortunately, our expenses keep rolling in for Kevin Canan, treasurer. Our
fundraisers, the Annual Flea Market, and the Ice Cream Social events will not be held in
2020.
That is not to say the Society Members have not been busy with various housekeeping
chores in the Schempp House and the Museum Building. Thanks to Nyla Vollmer, Ann
Cramer, and Tom Collins for mowing and trimming the lawn and grounds. Sarolin and
Don Griggs are using their Master Gardner skills to keep
the flower beds weedless. Chuck Eaton keeps our Web site interesting
with the Throwback Thursday feature and his other columns. Nyla Vollmer has hit the
jackpot with our Facebook page. There has been an excellent response, with as many
as 1,000 hits for exciting photos and information. Margaret Graham, vice president, is
always ready to advise our group in moving forward. If I have forgotten anyone who has
helped in any way, I apologize, but thanks to all.
The Board of Trustees is watching with interest the local school’s decision to open later
this month. It would be difficult to sanitize our collections as a whole because most of
our artifacts are either paper or textiles. I am praying that the country will once again be
safe, and folks from afar can visit the finest, little museum in Southeastern Ohio!
Remember, for your safety, follow the rules, and wear those masks
HAWK, THURNESS AND WERT DEPARTMENT STORE
From the Journal – Gazette Souvenir Edition of 1896
Though not one of the oldest, it is by common consent placed, today among the leading mercantile establishments of the Hocking Valley. They will not reach their first anniversary until January 15th, 1897, but they have demonstrated during the eleven months they have been in business here, that a large trade can build up even in dull times if business methods are adopted that meet the public wants. This they made their study from the start and it is this true appreciation of what the people require that they owe their almost astonishing success.
Their first move was to provide themselves with a stock of goods that was thoroughly up to date and that would meet the expectations of discriminating and fastidious trade. Then they decided to take the public in with them on the profit-sharing basis, selling exclusively for cash and giving their patrons a large share of usual profit in the lower prices they charge for their goods. This innovation met an instant response on the part of the people of Logan and Hocking County, and the firm leapt into the front rank almost at a single bound and by progressive methods have added to their prestige with ever passing day.
Their specialties are high class dry goods and late novelties in trimmings and ladies furnishing goods and fine shoes. Their dress goods department has grown into great and deserved popularity. They are showing the new and popular effects in the different goods of foreign and domestic weaves in qualities, quantities, assortments, and styles never before attempted in this market. Every piece in their large store shows taste and good judgement in their selection.
Their line of black dress goods is very complete and covers almost the entire range of plain, figured and effects, from the lowest priced domestic goods up to the highest grades of French and English imports. Their stock of silks has contributed largely to their reputation for high quality and correct styles. Here they show the largest stock and best assortments of colors and a greater range of qualities and prices, in all the plain and fancy colors, as well as blacks, to be found in the county. They are showing here to popular priced goods in leading styles both of American and French production as well as in the lower qualities of oriental silks and their prices are just as low as can be found in large cities, qualities considered.
There is just one hint we will drop here to the prospective buyer of silks. There are no goods manufactured in which imposition is so extensively practical as in the make up of these goods, and they are impossible of detection except by experts, therefore if a sild is wanted that will give service, it is better to deal at home where the sellers work goes as a guarantee of the quality. The trimmings are an important part of a lady’s dress and their stock of the proper things in this line is very elaborate and a perfect match for their piece goods.
Their stock would not be complete without a line of ladies furnishing goods and they are not the men to omit so important a matter from their stock and in keeping with the other departments, it embraces all the novelties as well as staples and the line is complete and exhaustive. They also carry a full line of gents furnishing goods and they are sold at their own scale of low prices and not at clothing store prices. One of their specialties is shoes and the line they carry is they widely celebrated Drew Selby Company’s make for which they are the exclusive agents for Hocking county. This factory makes a specialty of a perfectly formed ladies’ shoe and it is this feature that has given them such an extensive trade that covers the country from ocean to ocean and from the lakes to the gulf. They carry a good line of carpets; window curtains and good housekeeping dry goods that close buyers will find it to their interest to inspect.
They have just received a shipment of 100 pieces of oriental mattings, from the lowest to highest grades, which they purchased direct from the manufacturers agent and are virtually their own importation. They will be retailed at about the usual jobbers’ prices at wholesale. Do no miss this opportunity if you have a floor to lay with matting this spring.
LADIES’ CLOAKS AND WRAPS
Last but not least, we mention their stock of ladies and children’s cloak and wraps. This large branch of business had not been neglected in making up their stock and ladies who wish to appear well and at the same time having the knowledge that her outer wraps are in the latest mode should look over their extensive stock. The prices here as in other departments of the store, are surprisingly low when taken into consideration with the style, quality and general make up of the garments. It should be borne in mind of this stock, or in any other department of the store. Everything is new and up to date. The individual members of the firm are not only men of business qualifications but are also men of high social standing and morality. Equity and fair dealing are their motto, and it is dictated as much from motives of principle as it is from good business success. SILK UMBRELLASOf which they carry the largest line in the valley in all grades from the lowest to a very high grade. They come to them direct from manufacturers and they are cheap.
